New Dashcam Footage Shows Moments Before Police Shot Philando Castile
New dashcam footage shows moments before police shot Philando Castile.
The above video is evidence presented by Ramsey County Attorney’s Office in State of Minnesota v. Jeronimo Yanez in the Philando Castile shooting. A jury last Friday found Yanez, the police officer who shot Philando Castile, a black motorist, not guilty of second-degree manslaughter, prompting immediate outcry from Valerie Castile, Allysza Castile, the African American community, and social media.
A Little Backstory
Diamond Reynolds, Philando’s girlfriend, live-streamed a video on Facebook in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. It shows her calmly interacting with Yanez as he points the gun directly into her car window. We can see Philando slumped over, moaning in pain, and drenched in blood. Philando died at 9:37 p.m. CDT in the emergency room of the Hennepin County Medical Center—20 minutes after being shot.
In another video, Mrs. Castile, 61, says gives Facebook and the YouTube community a raw and uncut version of her emotions, and rightfully so. She says the city of Minnesota murdered her son while he was still in his seat belt. “Now they have free reign to keep killing us,” she goes on to say. I mourn Mrs. Castile’s loss and can only hope and actively seek change in a system that continues to deprive black families justice.
