It is a ‘catchall’ that includes any kind of poetry recited aloud, including hip-hop, jazz poetry, poetry slams, traditional poetry readings and can include comedy routines and ‘prose monologues.’

Christopher “Rooster” Martinez is a poet from San Antonio’s west side. He co-founded the Blah Blah Blah Poetry Spot, an open mic venue in San Antonio that maintains a focus on community outreach, as well as in assisting with the creative development of new poets and performers. Over the years, Christopher has developed a number of national and regional slam teams. He has competed at Texas Grand Slam, as well as conducted workshops at a number of high schools, universities, and community centers. In 2014 he earned the title of San Antonio Grand Slam Champion, leading a team of poets to represent the city at the at the National Poetry Slam Competition in Oakland, California. Christopher is an organizer for Fresh Ink Youth Slam, San Antonio’s only under 21 poetry writing and performance workshops for all ages, MC’ing and organizing open mic readings and poetry slams. Christopher writes in a personal narrative style. He has extensive experience competing across the country as a slam poet. He graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio with a degree in English.
