It Happened Again: Mentally Ill Black Woman Killed in New York by Police

BBC just posted a story about a Mentally Ill Black Woman Killed in NY by police. The death of another black person has sparked outrage – not only because the woman was 66-years-old, not only because she was someone’s grandmother—mother—sister, not only because now, she is another black woman in America gunned down by police, but because of her fragile mental state.New York City police respond to 128,000 calls about emotionally disturbed people each year, and are supposed to use

New York City police respond to 128,000 calls about emotionally disturbed people each year, and are supposed to use techniques to “de-escalate” a situation, rather than resort to force. In 2015, US police officers killed 346 black people, according to Mapping Police Violence.

The New York police officer, for now, is stripped of his gun and badge—but for how long? When will these senseless murders against the mentally ill, against black people at the hands of the police cease?

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Wednesday she “should be alive right now”, while NYPD Commissioner James O’Neil said his department had “failed”. If the department is taking ownership and accountability for Deborah Danner‘s death, then why has the department failed to read Miranda to the officer followed by his arrest? You can read more on this story below.
