A friend asked me,“Have You Seen “I Shot Andy Warhol“? I equivocated, and I must admit, I hadn’t seen the movie. He continued, “People who like this movie will like your book.” Running From Empty Shoes, is a memoir I wrote about the marvelous things that enabled me to confront my past as a cabaret girl, my art of relying on other expat experience to emigrate and voyage to the state of Florida, not to mention, the 2-years’ worth of affliction experienced  while in the face of two American police officers.

I must admit, the movie made me curious. I Shot Andy Warhol  is written by Mary Harron and Daniel Minahan—based on The Letters and Diaries of Candy Darling, 1992.

The amazing actress, Lili Taylor, plays Valerie Solanas. I especially like her character in Season 2 of American Crime. Although Running from Empty Shoes doesn’t open with a flash-forward moment after a shooting, Quianna Canada does find herself in custody on criminal charges like Valerie Solanas.1)Running from Empty Shoes, by Quianna Canada, page 259.

Mary Harron and Daniel Minahan’s character’s lifestyle is closely allied to my own, identically, living in a big city earning a living as a lady of the night.

In I Shot Andy Warhol, Valerie discovers that she is a lesbian, that she can write, and that she has a distinctive view of the world, and she meets Candy Darling who in turn introduces her to Andy.2)Candy Darling was transgender, and a popular American actress, best known as an Warhol Superstar. She starred in Andy Warhol‘s films Flesh (1968) and Women in Revolt (1971), and was a muse of the protopunk band The Velvet Underground.

To point out, I make the acquaintance of engrossing people all through my memoir, especially on my journey to freedom and self-expression.

In real life, Candy was lonely, desperate, and ultimately frustrated at society’s refusal to accept her. It’s rejection of who she truly was are described in her diary, in a similar vein to the memoir years of 2013-2015, and how I expressed my feelings about living in America. 3)Running from Empty Shoes, by Quianna Canada, page 223.

Valerie wants Warhol to produce her script, Up Your Ass; which is uncannily akin to an experience I had working on a screenplay called, When the Ocean Walks on Land. If you like the classic I Shot Andy Warhol, you’ll enjoy Running from Empty Shoes! It just may be regarded the feminist classic for 2016.
